MailSecur®

MailSecur is a mail screening system that uses terahertz (T-ray) imaging to show what is inside sealed envelopes, parcels and books in real time. Drug-treated paper shows up as coloured patches on screen, and it also finds powders, liquids, phones and weapons, so staff never have to open suspect mail.

  • Active 400 GHz T-ray imaging: live video inside sealed mail
  • Drug-laced paper mode: treated sheets show as coloured patches
  • All 9 DHS mail threat categories (X-ray detects 3)
  • 43.1 kg unit, fixed or on a mobile cart
  • US DHS SAFETY Act designated

Description

Synthetic drugs now reach prisons soaked into ordinary letters, books and legal documents. Treated paper has no odour, only minor discolouration and an unchanged texture, so staff can’t spot it by eye. Conventional narcotics test kits and trace analysers are built to identify known narcotics, not unknown chemicals soaked into paper. MailSecur takes a “detect first, then confirm” approach: imaging flags abnormal paper before anyone opens it, and suspect items then go for confirmation testing.

How it works

  • Scan unopened. The operator sees inside each sealed item in real time.
  • Normal items are cleared and go straight to the recipient.
  • Abnormal items are quarantined, still sealed.
  • Resolve. Follow your own procedures, with optional 24/7 expert backup.

What MailSecur detects

  • Treated and laced paper: fentanyl, K2/K3 (Spice), PCP and common chemicals
  • Suboxone: strips in letters, magazines and books, or behind labels
  • Powders: cocaine, fentanyl, cannabis and tobacco
  • Liquids: methamphetamine and THC
  • Electronics: mobile phones, SIM cards and USB drives
  • Weapons and sharps: knives, needles and blades
  • Emerging threats: new and evolving smuggling methods
MailSecur example: a handgun inside a sealed hard case, shown on the operator screen
Example from a MailSecur demonstration: a handgun inside a sealed hard case, as the operator sees it on screen.

Why security teams choose MailSecur

  • Mail stays sealed. Staff aren’t exposed to what’s inside, legal-mail confidentiality is kept and original documents are delivered.
  • No chemistry expertise needed. Treated paper shows as coloured patches, whether a page is heavily soaked or lightly treated.
  • Sees more than X-ray. Detects all nine US DHS mail threat categories; conventional X-ray detects three.
  • Light and quick to set up. 43.1 kg, about a tenth of the weight of an X-ray unit, and set up in under 30 minutes.
  • Screen anywhere on site. The mobile cart, with its own battery pack, screens seized property and paper from cell searches.

Proven in corrections

  • Texas Department of Criminal Justice: 89 systems deployed, 3,021 treated papers detected and 1,870 other threats intercepted.
  • 12 to 14 items detected per site in a typical week at major US state prisons and county jails.
  • Virginia DOC: inmate touches of legal mail cut from 20 a day to 2.
  • About $50K a year in staff time saved per site (0.5 to 1 FTE freed, assuming $33/hr fully burdened labour).

Results reported from US deployments.

FAQs

Does the mail have to be opened?

No. Each item is screened while still sealed. Cleared items go straight to the recipient, and suspect items are quarantined unopened.

What can MailSecur detect?

Drug-treated and laced paper (including fentanyl, K2/K3 Spice and PCP), Suboxone strips, powders, liquids, mobile phones, SIM cards, USB drives, knives, needles and blades.

Do operators need chemistry expertise?

No. Drug-treated paper shows as coloured patches on screen, whether a page is heavily soaked or lightly treated.

How does it compare with X-ray?

MailSecur detects all nine US DHS mail threat categories, where conventional X-ray detects three. At 43.1 kg it is about a tenth of the weight of an X-ray unit.

Can it be moved around the site?

Yes. It can be installed fixed or on a mobile cart with its own battery pack, so seized property and paper from cell searches can be screened anywhere on site.

What support does L&G provide?

A free consultation, site plan, installation, on-site training and ongoing support, with optional 24/7/365 remote expert analysis as an add-on to your support package.
